Dan Trachtenberg has plans to continue Naru's story in a sequel to Prey in addition to his animated Predator: Killer of Killers film and the upcoming Predator: Badlands which arrives this Fall! While the Prey sequel has yet to be officially announced by 20th Century Studios, Trachtenberg has already expressed interest and alluded to plans he has in place for Prey 2. This page tracks updates on the Prey sequel as new information becomes available!
Status of Prey 2
Currently, we know Dan Trachtenberg has his sights set on continuing the Prey storyline - specifically what happens next for Naru - Prey's Comanche protagonist played by Amber Midthunder. However, the last he spoke on the project, the possibility of Prey's sequel coming to fruition was dependent on the success and feedback received for Predator: Killer of Killers:
I had a bunch of big ideas when I finished Prey, I would love to get to all of them. There’s definitely a plan in mind, but the movie (Predator: Killer of Killers) has to do well. So, we’ll see. The third story, which I can’t speak to yet, is what would happen with Naru.
Following the release of the Predator anime Killer of Killers, Dan Trachtenberg expressed his excitement to get working on the third Predator project he had planned after Prey's initial release. Speaking to SFX, the director explained:
The reason why I felt possessed to make them and sort of why I rushed – I did two at once because I could do, I could multitask with animation – was because I was so eager to get to the third thing.
It is speculated that this third project is indeed his true sequel to Prey and the continuation of Naru's story. The interview also revealed if all goes well, Trachtenberg will begin work on Prey 2 as soon as Predator: Badlands has had its run.
Who will direct the Prey sequel?
We can only assume Dan Trachtenberg will once again helm his own sequel, although he could collaborate with other filmmakers like he did with Predator: Killer of Killers.
Will Prey 2 be live action or animated?
While the prospect of a live action Prey sequel is the most exciting, it is possible Naru's journey could continue in an animated entry. Predator: Killer of Killers did conclude by showing Naru frozen in cryo-storage, held captive by the Yautja.
Given Killer of Killers' positive feedback, it's possible the Prey sequel could be animated as well, however we don't know for sure.
