Edward James Olmos reveals The Predators funny side!

Fans will fondly remember Shane Black's performance in the 1987 movie Predator in which he played the character of Private Hawkins. Unlike most of the cast of the cult classic, Black was not a musclebound action star, and as such his character was portrayed as the comic relief of Major Dutch's Special Forces unit, frequently attempting to make tracker Billy (portrayed by the late Sonny Landham) laugh with his repertoire of 'pussy' jokes. Behind the scenes black also working (uncredited) with the writers Jim and John Thomas on the movie's script, as well as shadowing the director of the movie John McTiernan (Die Hard) in the hope of learning the trade for himself. This group of facts, known by most Predator fans and sourced from the 2-disc special edition of the 1987 movie together appear 'as is'. However, Cinemablend recently interviewed Edward James Olmos, star of 1982's Blade Runner and the recent reboot of Battlestar Galactica about his role as 'The General' in the forthcoming sequel The Predator. While there is no denying the actors enthusiasm in the interview, some of the actor's statements have raised fresh concerns with fans.

"Oh, my goodness. That's an interesting story. I haven't seen any of it, but it's gonna be funny. The kids in the thing. Yeah, the humor. Huge. Huge. I mean I was in shock, because, you know this is a really intense franchise, and it still is. Don't get me wrong. You're gonna be inside of it. But the characters are... what he did -- Shane is an incredibly gifted writer, and he's a great director, and so he ended up getting an incredible ensemble, and when I reached it they had already been filming for three months so they were a unit. So I jump in as the General and there were some moments where I just had to laugh in the scene and I couldn't be laughing in the scene. 'I'm sorry guys. Really, I'm sorry.'"

"Because Keegan (Michael Key) and Thomas Jane, they make... they're paired off in groups of three groups. Six guys. The way they work, they were all post-traumatic stress disorder guys who were inside of an insane asylum. A mental hospital. Then they put the lead character in there to kind of make them disappear, because they want them kind of out of the picture. And so he gets involved and then boom, the world goes crazy and these kids are released. But out of a freaky incident with some of the Predators. It's crazy. It's so crazy. I'm excited for it, and I don't know what's gonna happen. I got a good feeling about it. I mean if it's really funny, and yet deadly like Predator is."

From Olmos' interview the growing impression seems to be that The Predator will be a light-hearted comedy movie. Considering Black's history as Private Hawkins, the Lethal Weapon franchise and the fact that he has co-written The Predator with the Monster Squad and RoboCop 3 director Fred Dekker, together with what we know of the cast and the movie's plot thus far, adds considerable weight that the movie will indeed be heavily comedic. Although the Predator movies have had their share of comedic moments, they have always been R-rated action movies.

It would also appear that our fears have been confirmed with views of those that reportedly attended a recent test screening for the movie. Although opinion was split, with some of the audience in attendance loving the movie, there is also a rumored sizeable portion of the audience that hated it and claimed the movie to be too far detached from its predecessors to appease fans. One such fan claiming their friend to have been in attendance at the test screening shared their opinion via Twitter (via Manly Movie), calling the movie "Ridiculously Horrible".

Edward James Olmos is a class actor. If he says its good I trust him.

Predator is the type of franchise that could benefit from some gallows/black humour, but it would have to be delivered well and convincingly. Tom Jane is excellent at black humour at the very least....

The script is filled with crappy humour and slapstick situations that's for sure.
