For a few months now there have been murmurings that Disney are planning to reboot the Predator movie franchise following the acquisition of Fox film properties, however with no confirmation from Disney themselves, the news has remained at best nothing more than rumor.
However, following the recent news that Disney are planning to lock away the Alien films in their Disney vault we have received additional word concerning Disney's plans for the Predator and is sounds like Disney are indeed planning to reboot the property sometime in the near future.
Shane Black's The Predator which released in 2018 attempted to take the Predator franchise back to its roots but seemed to fall short of that goal. In concept, The Predator had a lot of great potential (just look at this mutated Predator concept art which went unused!), but the execution was lackluster and the film's box office returns only solidified that fact.
Originally, The Predator was even going to tie into Ridley Scott's Alien universe, by having a time-traveling Ripley arrive in the pod left behind by the Fugitive Predator. Some fans liked the idea, while many (specifically Alien fans) thought the mere idea of having such a connection would have tainted both franchises further.
It's clear Fox was unsure of how to handle the Predator property and with every sequel following Predator 2 being a relative letdown, the franchise's cinematic momentum seemed to grind to a halt with the release of The Predator last year.
Now that Disney own the rights to Predator and are planning to completely reboot the franchise, we're unsure of what direction the studio will take - will it attempt to retcon the 1987 original and wipe the slate clean? Or will they do a soft reboot, maintaining some elements of the original films?
While the fate of the Predator's film career remains unknown, fans can look forward to not one, but 2 new games based on the Predator universe! The first is a new Predator shooter game for the PlayStation 4 arriving next year and the other is a Predator VR experience!
